Hello Spoontaneous Readers!
Today we are exploring a one of a kind mom and pop ice cream shop located in the northwest side of San Antonio off of i10: Brindles Awesome Ice Creams (Brindles).
Atmosphere and Service:
It is located in a swanky strip mall that could be easily missed by the unassuming eye.

There are options for indoor and outdoor seating with some fun decor on the inside of the shop. The prints in the second picture on the wall read "Remember the a la mode". It is a nice area and atmosphere for bringing a family or a date.
The young staff was friendly and knowledgeable about their products. They appeared to be happy to be there on an odd slow Tuesday despite the quiet store.
Food and Quality:
What is unique about Brindles is that they have a selection of house made ice cream and gelato. They also have freshly made waffle cones that give off a welcoming scent upon entering the store.

When I asked what was the most popular flavors on the ice cream side and the gelato side, the response I got was: Brindled ice cream and Chocolate Chip (it had a fancier name that I couldn't say or remember) gelato. Of course I got both in a cup to try for our spoontaneous readers.

The brindled flavored ice cream reminded me a lot of the Gold Medal Ribbon flavor from Baskin Robbins if that helps for a reference. The texture of the ice cream itself was that softer handmade consistency that melts in just the right way. The base for the ice cream was vanilla with caramel ribbons mixed in, as well as what I thought to be pecans mixed with the ice cream. The nuts gave the ice cream a nice crunch to balance between the softness ice cream and gooeyness of the caramel. In plainest terms, it was delicious and I understand why it is the popular namesake flavor of the store.
The chocolate chip gelato was a softer consistency than the ice cream as gelato should be. It was creamy without being milky like ice cream can be sometimes. My only first world inconvenience would be that the ice cream was placed on top of the gelato which squished the gelato down a lot. The ice cream is more dense and as a result heavier than the gelato, so I wish that the ice cream was on bottom with the gelato on top.
Price:
The price I feel is fair from the perspective of a low income college student. For 2 scoops it was $4.29 and that was for either gelato or ice cream. The size of the scoops are quite large so it definitely feels like you are getting your money's worth. The quality of the ice cream also factors into the worth of dollar to ice cream.
Overall:
Overall, Brindles Awesome Ice Creams indeed has awesome ice cream. The atmosphere is young, fun, and feels like a mom and pop d-i-y type of place. The ice cream is excellent with texture and flavors that exceed expectations. The prices aren't too bad for how much ice cream the staff serves up. It is definitely worth every lick and try.
