Hello Spoontaneous readers!
In this post we will be exploring the bakery (panadería in spanish) portion of the popular choice Mexican food and market in San Antonio: Mi Tierra.
Atmosphere and Service:

Upon arrival you are welcomed into the building with bright colors and festive lighting. It is beautifully decorated year round so no one will ever miss out on the fun and colorful vibe. The entryway is wide and there are clear indicators as to where each line starts for the bakery or restaurant.
The counter service for the bakery are a couple of nice women who treat with the hospitality and respect that comes with being in Texas. Every customer was addressed as sir or ma'am by the staff. Noticeably nice service was a definite plus at Mi Tierra.
Food and Quality:
Aren't these pastries so colorful and gorgeous?

Everything displayed looked good enough to eat. From the more familiar items such as scones and cookies, to the pieces of candied pumpkin and sweet potato, the cases were eye catching and as colorful as the store. The pastries themselves were not frilly or had any unnecessary details but more details on that later.
When I asked what the most popular item was that they sold, the answer I got on this day was: the pumpkin or sweet potato empanada. I tried both of these empanadas to report to all the spoontaneous readers today.

The pumpkin empanada was what it sounds like, pumpkin filling folded over in a soft dough for a convenient handheld snack. The dough took on the flavor of the pumpkin without taking the moisture from the filling. The filling was not too sweet and not overpowered with spices commonly paired with pumpkin such as nutmeg or allspice. It was simple and hit the spot.

I was apprehensive of the sweet potato empanada since I usually have sweet potato alongside grilled chicken and broccoli. However, this was the winner between the two empanadas that I tried. The sweet potato had more flavor than her pumpkin sister, but still not overpowering enough to hurt your teeth with sweetness or spices. The empanada dough was consistent in softness and handheld ability.
Prices:
Of course when finding a treat you fall in love with price can matter. The bakery at Mi Tierra did not have their prices next to their pastries, nor did they have their prices listed on any kind of menu board. I'm sure if I had asked one of the staff they would have known all the prices for each treat.
For the two empanadas it was $3. Even as a low income college student, I would say that is an extremely fair price for the handmade pastries that you get.
Overall:
Mi Tierra bakery has many treats that don't have all the glitz, glamour, or mark up that other bakeries have. The sweets are delicious and fairly price, and they appeal to people who like sweets that don't hurt your teeth with sugar. If you get a minute in Market Square to stop by Mi Tierra, you definitely should!
